Boros Energy is a fast, creature-based aggro deck that pressures you before you can assemble Goblin Charbelcher — your primary concern is surviving to your combo turn while managing Ragavan stealing your spells and Phlage generating card advantage. Harbinger of the Seas enters as a soft lock piece that shuts off their fetchlands and basic-heavy manabase, severely taxing their ability to play multiple spells per turn. Hurkyl's Recall doubles as an emergency reset against their artifact-based acceleration (like a Talisman or Treasure from Ragavan) and can tempo them out when they're pressuring you. Stern Scolding and Spell Snare are trimmed because most of their threats fall outside those targets (Ajani, Phlage, Ocelot Pride, Seasoned Pyromancer), while Disrupting Shoal, Counterspell, and Suppression Ray provide better interaction against their key threats. Post-board watch for Deafening Silence, which is your hardest hate piece — keep Consign to Memory open to answer it before committing to your combo turn.
Jeskai Blink's most dangerous interaction is their four maindeck Consign to Memory instants, which can counter Goblin Charbelcher's activated ability on the stack before it resolves—our own Consign to Memory package answers their counters, stops Solitude's evoke trigger, and neutralizes Ragavan's combat damage trigger. Hurkyl's Recall comes in primarily to answer Damping Sphere, which they will almost certainly board in to tax our multi-spell turns; it also incidentally bounces any artifact-based acceleration they develop. We cut Waterlogged Teachings as too slow in a matchup where we need to combo before their tempo threats bury us under card advantage, and trim Stern Scolding and Unable to Scream since Force of Negation and Mystical Dispute provide more versatile free or cheap interaction against their blue spells and post-board haymakers like High Noon. The gameplan remains unchanged: assemble Goblin Charbelcher behind a wall of counterspells, but now we have dedicated tools to fight through their layered denial on the stack.
Affinity presents a fast, wide artifact board backed by post-board Damping Sphere, making this a race where landing Goblin Charbelcher before they bury us in constructs and modular triggers is the primary objective. Hurkyl's Recall is our most powerful tempo swing — hold it until they're fully committed to their board, cast it at end of their turn, then untap to find and activate Belcher. Consign to Memory counters Urza's Saga activations, Kappa Cannoneer triggered abilities, and other stack-based threats that would otherwise let them outpace our combo. Force of Negation and Mystical Dispute protect our win condition from their counterspell package — Metallic Rebuke and post-board Force of Negation — ensuring Whir of Invention or the Belcher activation resolves cleanly. We trim Stern Scolding, Suppression Ray, Unable to Scream, and Tamiyo as they are too conditional or too slow for a race where every turn matters.
