Buy sideboard on ManapoolGruul Basking Broodscale Combo relies on Ancient Stirrings, Malevolent Rumble, and Urza's Saga-style value into Emrakul, the Promised End, whose cast cost reduction depends on card types in the graveyard. Break the Ice is excellent here since the opponent relies heavily on lands that produce colorless mana, such as Eldrazi Temple, Ugin's Labyrinth, and Urza's Saga, allowing us to disrupt their mana development and key nonbasic lands. We cut Rite of Consumption since sacrificing our own creatures for damage is not the priority against a combo/ramp deck we want to out-grind or disrupt, and Serum Powder gives way to Break the Ice as land destruction is more impactful than a mulligan tool here.
Izzet Prowess is a fast burn/tempo deck with Monastery Swiftspear, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Lightning Bolt, and Expressive Iteration. Veil of Summer makes our spells uncounterable against their blue counterspells and grants hexproof from blue, while also drawing a card if they've cast a blue spell (like Expressive Iteration or Preordain) this turn. March of Wretched Sorrow comes in as removal that gains life to help us stabilize. Plunge into Darkness is too slow and life-costly against a deck this fast, and Revitalizing Repast doesn't protect us from a deck that kills via direct damage to the face, not combat, so those come out for proactive protection and disruption.
Esper GenericBlink runs heavy black and blue disruption with Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Orcish Bowmasters, and Kaito, Bane of Nightmares, so Veil of Summer is premium protection, making our spells uncounterable and giving us hexproof from their blue and black removal while drawing a card off their blue/black spells. Surgical Extraction lets us exile copies of key targets like Solitude or Orcish Bowmasters once they enter the graveyard, preventing Overlord of the Balemurk from returning them to hand or Emperor of Bones from exiling and reanimating them while stripping remaining copies from their hand and library. We cut passive protective and slow value cards since this matchup is a disruption race where proactive discard and removal matter far more than defending our own creatures.
