“Mono-Blue Stiflenought wins by cheating Phyrexian Dreadnought into play as a 12/12 trampler on turn one by using Stifle or Vision Charm to counter its 'sacrifice creatures with total power 12 or greater' triggered ability. The deck protects this threat and its combo pieces with a dense suite of free and cheap counterspells (Counterspell, Foil, Daze, Thwart, Misdirection), while cantrips and card draw (Opt, Portent, Gush, Impulse) provide the consistency needed to assemble the two-card combo quickly. The strategy is essentially a tempo-combo hybrid: land a 12/12 on turn one and then protect it long enough to kill the opponent in two attack steps.”

Buy sideboard on ManapoolThis mirror comes down to who assembles Phyrexian Dreadnought protection first, and Annul is excellent insurance since it can counter their own Phyrexian Dreadnought or a Powder Keg if they bring it in, while stopping any Essence Flare they board in against your Dreadnought. Blue Elemental Blast covers nothing here since the opponent is mono-blue, so it stays in the board since it can only target red spells or red permanents. Cut redundant Vision Charms since you only need one to protect your own Dreadnought, and trim the singleton Chain of Vapor since bouncing their Dreadnought is less relevant when both decks race. Keep your full counterspell suite (Counterspell, Foil, Daze, Thwart, Misdirection) since this matchup is a counter war for tempo priority. Play to protect your own turn-one Dreadnought and hold up mana to counter their Dreadnought.
Mono-Red Sligh is full of red spells and permanents (Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Seal of Fire, Grim Lavamancer, Fireblast), making Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast extremely efficient one-mana answers that can counter their burn or blow up Grim Lavamancer. Daze is weak here since giving up tempo by bouncing your own land against an aggressive burn deck can be fatal, and Impulse is too slow when you need to be interacting every turn. Stifle is valuable against Grim Lavamancer activations, Cursed Scroll activations, and Wasteland/Bloodstained Mire fetch effects. Prioritize keeping your life total high since Fireblast and burn to the face are their reach; use Vision Charm defensively on lands only if needed but usually save it for your own Dreadnought plan.
Annul is superb here since nearly every relevant permanent in this deck is an enchantment (Enchantress's Presence, Solitary Confinement, Sterling Grove, Opalescence, Parallax Wave), letting you counter their engine pieces on the spot. The extra Chain of Vapor gives you a way to bounce a resolved Solitary Confinement or other problematic permanents, buying tempo. Daze is weak since this is a grindy matchup where you need real mana available every turn, and Flash of Insight is too slow against their card-advantage engine. Prioritize using Stifle on Enchantress's Presence card-draw triggers, and counter Solitary Confinement on sight.
