Mono Red Madness is a racing deck β Guttersnipe and Kessig Flamebreather create a damage clock on top of their burn suite, so your primary goal is to assemble the Balustrade Spy + Dread Return + Lotleth Giant combo before their burn kills you. Cast Down is the key sideboard addition to answer Guttersnipe and Kessig Flamebreather, removing their non-bolt damage sources before they snowball; Fume Spitter can trade with Voldaren Epicure to deny them an early Madness enabler. Healer of the Glade provides a life buffer each time you cast a spell during your combo setup, extending your window against Fireblast and Fiery Temper. Mesmeric Fiend comes out because Madness decks actively want to discard cards, so hand disruption is counterproductive, and Masked Vandal has zero relevant targets in their mainboard. The extra Swamp smooths black mana access for your three Cast Downs.
Mono Red Madness aims to kill you quickly through direct burn and damage triggers from Kessig Flamebreather and Guttersnipe, which compound rapidly as they cycle through Faithless Looting and Highway Robbery to fuel madness spells. Your primary goal post-board is to survive long enough to assemble Balustrade Spy and combo off, so Healer of the Glade comes in to offset the constant incremental burn damage and buy you those extra turns. Cast Down addresses their most dangerous permanent threats β Kessig Flamebreather and Guttersnipe β before they can snowball damage off the stream of cheap spells. Mesmeric Fiend is cut because the opponent actively wants to empty their hand through Faithless Looting and Highway Robbery, making hand disruption nearly worthless here. Masked Vandal is trimmed since their main deck contains no artifact or enchantment targets, and one Nyxborn Hydra and one Gatecreeper Vine are shaved to round out the swap without compromising the combo's creature density.
This matchup is a race between your combo and their counterspell suite β they will try to Counterspell or Deem Inferior your Balustrade Spy or Dread Return, so your primary goal is to strip their interaction before going off. Bring in additional Mesmeric Fiends to disrupt their hand and clear the path for your combo turn, and Flaring Pain to invalidate any Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast they board in against your Dread Return targets. Faerie Macabre comes in as graveyard hate insurance against Sleep of the Dead recurring their creatures and slowing your setup, and can be hardcast as a flash threat if needed. Masked Vandal and situational fatties are trimmed since artifact/enchantment removal is irrelevant here and you want a leaner, more disruption-focused configuration. Try to sequence Mesmeric Fiend to grab Counterspell before deploying your combo pieces, as resolving Balustrade Spy is all you need to win.
